Defra (The Department for the Environment Food and Rural affairs) says there are three broad training categories.

1. Sustainability awareness training

Awareness training can help to encourage a sense of personal responsibility to wards the environment. It relates to an understanding of the meaning of the word "sustainable development" and the implications for the College. Different ways of explaining the sustainability concept may need to be devised in order to communicate to different target audiences. Senior managers are an important target audience and they are particularly interested in the business case for responding to the sustainability challenge.

2. Sustainability management systems training

Sustainability training is relevant for individuals with responsibility for establishing the sustainability management system or staff who have a key role in ensuring the everyday effectiveness of the system, once established. It should be set in the context of what the college is aiming to achieve.

3. Job-specific training

Job-specific training is mainly for staff who have a specific role in helping to achieve sustainability objectives and targets. For colleges, key areas for job-specific environmental training include sustainability learning for all students, procurement, resource efficiency, local learning partnerships for sustainability.

Other Opportunities: Boardroom Sustainability Training

We focus the executive on the customer first.  Research shows that sustainability as a concept - as a word - does not really mean much to many consumers.  Yes, to educated consumers it is increasingly important.  However sustainability needs to be linked to something relevant to people: their local produce or health for example.  Equally people do not want an oil company ruining the environment but asked will they pay 20% more for fuel...! There is clearly a balance and an intelligent thought-through approach required to a sustainability policy.  Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), and sustainability policy then followed by training for the executive is a new field which we have expertise to assist you with.

A joined-up approach between training at grass roots level on sustainability and a workshop as described above at executive level is often missing in modern organisations. We provide the missing part of the jigsaw in a non-patronising intelligent manner without the need to visit a camp-fire...unless of course you wish to...because we can do that too!
