Writing For Websites

Images that catch the eyes! Smiling mouths catch the eyes

Have we caught your eye yet?

Writing for websites share some rules you learn from our Writing For Business page.

However there are unique aspects to writing for the website. Here we provide you with ideas on writing as distinct from design primarily. There are also recommendations for website links.

Eye Tracking on Websites and Priority Areas

Top left-hand side of the page is where people first look on a web page: perhaps not surprisingly! More detailed research - particularly by Jakob Nielson - shows an F shaped route across the page. Most people scan the web page so here are ways to capture and keep reader interest:

  • Use Headings,and
  • bullet points
  • numerals ie 1,2,3 not one, two, three
  • bold type
  • underline words

Images

Images attract the eye but there are issues. Some Key Points:-

John Drewry Business Writing Guru

- sub heads as on the left with "John Drewry" attract the eye first
- accessibility is vital: images should be named for reading devices
- usability studies indicate clear wording is preferable to over-use of imagery
- however it depends upon your specific market and offering

Good Marketing and other Top Tips For Website Writing

  1. A solid Marketing Brief is essential - for more on Marketing Briefs you can use our marketing templates

  2. Make sure copy drives design and images not visa versa. However this means you need a very good Marketing Brief. If you need more help on the Brief call Peter Eales on 01202 706 975 or email him at peter@oisolutions.co.uk

  3. Develop from the Brief, if it is not already established the brand proposition. This is another huge area we could write books on! Again if you need more help on this call Peter Eales on 01202 706 975 or email him at peter@oisolutions.co.uk

  4. Now you can create exciting "calls to action" to the readers

  5. Your designer(s) have a much better chance to work with you and complement the copy if you follow this process. There need not be a battle or confusion between the words and images.

  6. An image with a sub-heading is always very powerful and on a website the hyperlinks bring it alive
