Innovation Survey
Innovation and New Product Development
Survey To Find The Top Five Ways To Improve Innovation And New Product Development
Our purpose was to establish from innovation and new product development practitioners views on innovation issues. Strategic and vision statements are currently popular but what is actually going on? Who owns innovation within large organisations and how do new ideas get encouraged, reviewed, tested, rewarded and implemented? This was an initial confidential sample survey intended to cut through the current jargon. A more detailed survey will be carried out in the Autumn.
The Sample
Director level innovation and new product development marketing individuals - UK global organisations
Headline Findings
Respondents believe:
- Marketing and New Product Development own innovation
- CEO and Boards are the main driver’s of innovation
- Internal marketing and publications are important
- Suggestion schemes are still important
- Intranet and company blogs were highlighted as areas being considered

Question 2. Any other suggestions?
- “Market orientated business management as opposed to cost cutting and operations led.”
- “Revenue targets from new "streams" “
- “Making salesforce part of the process. Getting early 'buy in' from salesforce. Speedy delivery (not something our industry - group insurance - is good at)"
- “A positive no blame culture with open communications encourages innovation”
- “Continued engagement with all stakeholders - crucial for membership organisations such as this (comments from a professional body organisation)”
Question 3. Views on Innovation Issues
- “Clear definition of innovation within the business organisation. Culture of encouragement and ok to make mistakes to encourage new ideas.“
- “Leadership barriers tend to be the biggest issue.”
- “I work on NPD in the group insurance industry. It's proved difficult to market anything other that 3 core products - the role is more proposition development than product development.”
- “Focus is a key theme for management.”
- “A company should set a business objective of targeting 50% of its incomes from products of less than three years old. This way there is always plenty of good news to share with clients on new products extended services etc. Requires plenty of external scanning for changes in PESTEL areas. This bit of language is repeated here to see whether there is a limit to amount of text that this box will handle.”
- “Innovation is a very current hot topic in marketing, but is it just flavour of the month? It shouldn’t be.”
